For men going through a divorce
The things men often carry alone during a separation, and practical first steps for your mind, your health and your case.
Many men go through a divorce with very few people to talk to. Friends may be shared with the marriage, family may take sides, and the habit of “handling it” runs deep. So the grief, the anger and the fear about money, home or children often stay inside. This guide is a place to start.
What you might be feeling
- Loss of identity. Husband, provider, the person at the head of the table. When those roles shake, it can feel like losing yourself, not just a marriage.
- Anger that has nowhere to go. At your spouse, at the process, at a system you may feel is against you.
- Shame. About the marriage ending, or about struggling with it.
- Numbness. Getting through days on autopilot, working too much, not feeling much at all.
All of these are normal. None of them have to be handled alone.
Look after the body first
Men under stress often stop eating properly, sleep badly and drink more. Those three alone make everything worse: anger, low mood, decision-making. Keep meals regular, cut back on alcohol for a while, and move your body every day, even just a walk. These are not soft advice. They keep you able to think clearly when it counts.
Talk to someone
Pick one person, a friend, a brother, a colleague you trust, and tell them honestly how it is going. You do not need advice from them, just someone who knows. If there is nobody, a counsellor is exactly that person. Writing it down privately also helps: putting a feeling into words reduces its intensity, and nobody else has to see it.
Practical steps for the separation itself
- Get advice from a family lawyer early, before you agree to anything or sign anything. Understand your rights and duties about property, maintenance and children.
- Keep your own records. Income and expenses, messages, time spent with your children, payments made. Facts, kept calmly.
- Do not fight through your children. Never ask them to carry messages or take sides, and never speak badly about their mother to them. Courts and, more importantly, your children notice.
- Keep your communication short and civil. Assume any message could be read by a judge. Write angry replies here first, and send the calm version.
You are more than this case
It is easy for a divorce to become your whole life for a while. Keep one or two things that are just yours: a sport, a skill, a group, time with friends. They are what you will rebuild from.
